Samsung will release the Blu-ray and HD DVD-playing Duo HD Player (BD-UP5000) before the Holidays. Unlike LG’s Super Mega Happy Whatever dual disc player, Samsung’s will actually support both formats completely, interactive features and all. The player stands to benefit from the general confusion surrounding the high definition disc format war. (‘Cause it’s so confusing…)

The Hollywood types are all excited about its release, too, since it means that they can more easily shovel their works of art onto unsuspecting folks. Or, in the words of the Warner Home Video President, to reduce “buyer hesitancy towards HD media.”

I dare dream of a day when discs are entirely obsolete.
