Microsoft Tries To Justify 120GB Xbox 360 Hard Drive's $180 Price

The 120GB hard drive for the Xbox 360, purchased as a separate accessory, will cost $179.99 when it comes out later this month. I repeat, $180 for a 120GB hard drive. Isn’t that a bit much? Lots of folks on the Internets thought so, too, forcing Microsoft to respond to allegations of overcharging.

Microsoft said that comparisons to regular, off the shelf hard drives (where you can get 500GB for as little as $155) are improper since installing those hard drives isn’t a “plug and play experience.” Moreover, Microsoft said that its hard drive is priced at about the same level as self-powered, external hard drives. OK, whatever you say Microsoft. Just don’t be surprised when no one buys your wildly overpriced “Elite” console, despite the fact that you gimped it.
