Have you an Amazon wishlist? I do, but I don’t use it that much anymore because I really wish it was a universal list, one that enabled me to add to it as I browsed around the web. I tried Froogle recently and their wishlist service but once again I was limited by its functionality. So a few days ago along came gifttagging.com a new service that aims to make it easy to create a universal wish list as you browse.
The service was created by this side up and written using ruby on rails, the new object orientated programming language and framework, in less than 3 months. This is still very early days for gifttagging but it has a very clean, easy to use and simple user interface.
To begin with you can import your Amazon wishlist into your new “universal” wishlist or you can create individual items as you browse using the bookmarklets or firefox plugin. Of course there is a similar US based company called wishlistr and like gifttagging, it enables you to import your Amazon wishlist and/or your delicious tagged items.
What makes gifttagging stand out is the fact it also embraces web 2.0 functionality such as tag clouds and social networking so that you see what other people are adding to their wishlists. Of course you can also share your wishlist by sending a people a unique link to your list or better still you can display it in a sidebar link on your blog.
Finally gifttagging has been working with review sites like Crunchgear so that all of the products reviewed on Crunch Gear can immediatley be added to yor gifttagging wish list. Hopefully more sites will adopt the little icon such as CrowdStorm and Revoo
One possible competitor site in the UK is Dealtagger which I was using because of its support for hlistings but I will certainly give gifttagging.com a prolonged period of use to see which I prefer.
