Core 2 Duo MacBook Pros: In Production Now?

Another day, another completely unsubstantiated Apple rumor. This one comes to us courtesy of Apple Insider. Its sources claim Apple is close to replacing the Core Duo processor in the current line of MacBook Pros with the Core 2 Duo, and bringing the clock speeds up to 2.33GHz. In fact, they said production has started. That would kick much ass.

Of course, we’ve been waiting for this proc bump on the MacBook line for awhile, and Apple’s competitors have already beaten it to the Core 2 Duo punch.

The sources on this said the CPU bump will be included in the consumer MacBook as well, but we don’t buy it. Apple needs to differentiate the MacBook Pro from its little, non-video-RAM-having brother, and traditionally the PowerBook and iBooks have had a one-processor-generation difference. We might see these upgraded chips in the black, high-end MacBook, if at all.

Other than the processor upgrade, the sources said the line should stay about the same.
