It certainly isn’t the much anticipated Google Music Store, but today Google started to incorporate music information into normal google search results in the same way they incorporate movie and stock information. If Google recognizes the band, album or song, they will put results at the top of search.
Now you can search for a popular artist name, like the Beatles or the Pixies, and often Google will show some information about that artist, like cover art, reviews, and links to stores where you can download the track or buy a CD via a link at the top of your web search results page.
Om says he found lots of obscure music, but my favorite band from college isn’t included.
Google is currently linking to iTunes, Rhapsody and others to purchase music as well as reviews from select sites on the web. This is, of course, a good first step in putting together a music store. Let’s see where they go with this.

I would have loved to sit in on the meetings where google pitched the music services on data sharing this way.
How is the precedence in service listing determined? Its not alpha, and its not price; has Apple paid google to get iTMS at the top of the list? How much did eMusic spend to get their promo blurb in there?
Its an interesting departure from google’s usual model of having objective results primary, sponsored results off to one side; I’m surprised the services aren’t listed aphabetically with (for example) the eMusic plug in a side bar.
Quite cool.
A feature where users can rate an album/song would be great in addition to the popular music magazines.
What’s not so great is that “Latest News” and “Artist Websites” are often not very relevant, especially when checking out Pixies albums.
Did you try searching for Pixies on http://www.bandnews.org ?
>my favorite band from college isn’t included.
True, but Tojo never made it to Darwin, either.
Mike, here they are. -c
I find the reviews to be somewhat interesting. Im assuming they are aggregating reviews from only certain sources? It would be nice to have reviews from any source be pulled together in a similar fashion. I wonder if the ratings from the different sites are treated equally, or are they and should they be weighted? Is a critic review more valuable than the average of multiple user reviews?
Hoodoo Gurus might not be there, but my favourite college band is.
Mike - you’re a Gurus fan? I *knew* you were a cool guy
ZZZzzz
Dave, Yeah, love em. Have copies of every cd they’ve made, inlcuding the stuff only released in Australia.
Mike,
The URL’s you need for this should be
http://www.google.com/musicsearch?q=Hoodoo+Gurus
http://www.google.com/musicsearch
This way you can click the album at get to the other links for Online purchase, Artist links, Photo’s, Discussions and the latest news on the artist.
The Google Music search now includes links to lyrics on the search.
This was absent in the original search and has now been included.
Is this Google site still live?
Well, I searched for ‘Snow Patrol’ on Google (from within Firefox 2) and this was the first time that I got these music results. I was stunned… On the Belgian website from Google (google.be) these results are not yet active. I hope this will change soon, because this is really awesome!
